Breastfeeding is more than just nourishment; it is a profound act of love between a mother and her baby. From the very first moment when a mother holds her newborn close to her chest a silent promise and emotional bond is born. But, in India thousands of new mothers stop breastfeeding early. The data from UNICEF states that only 55% of infants below six months are breastfed properly.
For a baby, breast milk is nature’s first gift and easily digestible food. Along with that, the warmth of their mother’s skin, the steady beat of her heart, the gentle rhythm of her breathing—these are the first things a baby knows, and breastfeeding brings them all together.
Importance of Breastfeeding
It contains nutrition which includes balanced fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, antibodies and love which helps the baby to grow, and develop both in physical and brain. Breastfeeding boosts immunity and fights diseases by reducing the risk of infections and chronic diseases. The first six months of breastfeeding is important as it can increase the survival rates of the infant.
Breastfeeding is considered beneficial for both mother and baby, since it helps both of them equally. For mothers, it can help the uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size, reduce postpartum bleeding, strengthen hearts, and lower the risk of certain cancers. Also, helps to lower stress levels and improve sleep quality through hormone regulation.
Why is Breastfeeding Eco-friendly and Sustainable?
Breastfeeding is a gift to the world. It is natural, sustainable, and kind to the planet as it requires no packaging, fuel, water, or transport making breastfeeding a zero-waste no energy usage and low carbon choice unlike formula feeding. Therefore, it can be considered as both eco-friendly and sustainable to the environment. It is considered as the most environmentally sustainable way to feed infants, reducing the strain on healthcare systems and the planet.
But, what challenges do this generation of mothers face?
This generation especially in urban women have to juggle both home and work responsibilities. Therefore, breastfeeding becomes a challenge for women belonging to tier-2 and tier-3 cities, as it becomes quite a tough task for new mothers to adjust with the routine. The first six months baby needs time to time feeding.
New moms face challenges such as latching difficulties, back pain, and lack of workplace support. The abundance of conflicting online advice and suggestions from various people often leads to confusion. So due to the lack of proper guidance and encouragement, some moms discontinue breastfeeding early. And, this is where lactation support and education are important.
Some general steps to support breastfeeding
Each and every person should understand the importance of breastfeeding irrespective of gender. Society should contribute in making a judgement free environment for the moms.
- 1Awareness plays a key role. Hospitals, clinics, and communities must spread awareness on the importance of breastfeeding and celebrate breastfeeding week regularly.
- It is important to create a friendly and supportive environment at the workplace to support and encourage new moms. Compulsory nursing breaks and lactation rooms should be made.
- New moms and the family members should visit lactation expert and understand the importance of lactation.
Breastfeeding is not just a responsibility of a mother. it’s a societal duty to ensure that every child has a healthiest start.
