New Delhi, September 16: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Tuesday attended the National Engineers’ Day celebration 2026 at Manan Kendra, Gangtok, commemorating the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, one of India’s eminent engineers and nation-builders.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Tamang acknowledged the contributions of senior and retired engineers, stating that their decades of service had played an important role in building Sikkim’s roads, bridges, buildings, water and power infrastructure, and in shaping the State’s development journey.

He said that engineers today are contributing beyond conventional technical roles, with many taking on responsibilities in administration, policy implementation and leadership. He emphasised that their expertise would remain indispensable as Sikkim progresses towards the vision of a Sunaulo, Samriddha and Samartha Sikkim.

The Chief Minister highlighted initiatives undertaken by the State Government to provide greater recognition and opportunities to the engineering fraternity. He noted that several engineers have been entrusted with responsibilities as Departmental Secretaries and Heads of Departments, while thousands of young engineers serving on a temporary basis have also been regularised.

He also appreciated the engineering fraternity’s participation in activities such as the Engineers’ Day Run, sports events and the Inter-Departmental Futsal Tournament, stating that such initiatives promote teamwork, camaraderie and a healthy work-life balance.

Urging young engineers to learn from the experience of their seniors, Chief Minister Tamang encouraged them to embrace new technologies and continue to innovate. He said that an engineer’s contribution should be measured not only by what they build, but also by the positive impact their work creates in people’s lives.

He called upon the engineering fraternity to continue working with dedication and integrity towards building a greener, stronger and more progressive Sikkim.
