Ericsson, Saudi Railway Company Partner on 5G-Powered Rail Operations

Ericsson and Saudi Railway Company collaborate on 5G-powered rail operations

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 27th October, 2025: Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and the Saudi Railway Company (SAR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance rail operations through 5G technology, setting the stage for a new era of smart and connected railways in the Kingdom.

The collaboration supports the National Transport and Logistics Strategy under Saudi Vision 2030, focusing on modernizing communication systems, enhancing passenger experiences, and accelerating digital transformation across the transportation sector.

Under this partnership, Ericsson will leverage its global expertise in 5G and Future Railway Mobile Communication Systems (FRMCS) to deploy cutting-edge infrastructure, solutions, and technical support. The goal is to improve rail reliability, safety, and connectivity through mission-critical 5G networks.

The agreement includes the deployment and testing of FRMCS-based use cases, high-speed broadband solutions for passengers (“Gigabit Train”), and the creation of an innovation and testing center to validate 5G applications in rail operations. Additionally, training programs will be developed to upskill SAR teams in next-generation rail communication technologies.

A trial deployment of Ericsson’s 5G solutions on one of SAR’s existing lines will evaluate real-world performance and integration, enabling advanced use cases such as train control, staff communications, real-time video streaming, and IoT connectivity on board.

The Ericsson–SAR collaboration represents a significant step toward the digital modernization of Saudi Arabia’s rail infrastructure, paving the way for a more connected, efficient, and sustainable transportation network aligned with the Kingdom’s long-term vision.
